The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, disclosed that Yoruba language had no rival anywhere in the world in terms if it’s worth, beauty and the attention it gets from tourists who were eager to learn more about our cultural heritage.
“Anytime we are talking about our culture, don’t let us also forget about our language, it’s our heritage, there is nothing like our language anywhere around the world, I urge you to hold it in high esteem, so that we can promote our language among our culture,” He said.
The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, while appreciating the role of Drums in Yoruba culture, said he had learnt something new from the Ogun State’s initiative, adding that Governor Ibikunle Amosun willingness to host the African Drums Festival was commendable.
He noted that he would challenge the Governor of Oyo State back home to also look out for a way of promoting Yoruba culture from extinction.
‘’We in Oyo call ourselves ‘Aji se bi Oyo la n ri, Oyo o se bi baba enikan kan’ I will tell Ajimobi to buckle up, I will tell him to see to a way we too can promote our culture,’’ He said.
Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka noted that it was a good opportunity to boast that everything good begins in Ogun State.
“If you don’t believe me, take ‘Afrobeat’ for instance, Fela started it here, it all began here, Afrobeat began here, so while are we surprised that the first African Drums Festival began in Ogun State, it’s normal, we are used to it, “He said.
Evangelist Ebenezer Obey Fabiyi stated that drums were integral parts of anything music, be it traditional or religious, appreciating Governor Ibikunle Amosun for starting a project that would continue to project and protect the Yoruba culture from extinction.
