The Authority of Ogun – Oshun River Basin Development Authority has assured the Ogun State Government of its efforts to ensure scientific based best practices releases of water from Oyan Dam in order to mitigate against flooding at the downstream of the river this year as it has been undertaken in previous years.
The assurance was given by the Managing Director /CEO of the Authority, Olufemi Odumosu when he received the Ogun State Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter Governmental Affairs, Barrister Olufemi Ogunbanwo and his team at the Authority’s Headquarters, Abeokuta.
Odumosu who said the Oyan Dam was one of the multipurpose Dam within the purview of the RBDA, made it known that the average synthesized Annual flow volume of the Dam is average at 1770 mcm against a Gross Storage of 270mcm.
He said based on information derived from Seasonal Rainfall Predictions (SRP) from Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and the Annual Flood Outlook (AFO) produced by Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), releases of water is being done before the rainy season to reduce water level in the reservoir to minimum possible level, so as to create more space in the reservoir for flood control. This he said has started in January this year.
Odumosu said from the prediction of NIHSA through their Annual Flood Outlook for 2020, this year flood will be lower compare with what was seen in the year 2019. He however cautioned those who have built on the flood plain or living at the river bank of Ogun River to beware, saying its mandatory for water to be released from the Dam at the required level in order to ensure it’s safety.
He said the Authority will soon release a Public Statement on the flood outlook in Ogun – Oshun RBDA catchment Area and Oyan River Dam Project Water Releases to further sensitize and enlighten the public.
Earlier, the Hon. Commissioner, Barrister Olufemi Ogunbanwo said he and his team were at the Authority’s headquarters by the directive of His Excellency, Governor Dapo Abiodun, MFR to visit the Authority after the State Executive Council’s meeting in order to seek the Authority’s assistance on how releases from the Oyan Dam could be controlled to avoid flooding downstream of the Dam.
He said even though it is pertinent for water to be released from the Dam as at when due, the State Government would appreciate whatever measure the Authority could take in ensuring reduction of flood downstream whenever this is done.
Others on the Commissioner’s entourage are the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr Olumide Sotubo, Director of Admin, Mr Bayo Somoye while the Ogun State Commissioner for Environment was represented by Engr.(Mrs) Onasanya.
