Government is set to resume the enumeration and registration of commercial motorcyclists popularly referred to as
‘Okada Riders’ in Ekiti state.
The Executive Chairman of Ekiti State Internal Revenue Service, Mr.
Olumuyiwa Ogunmilade who made this known at a stakeholders meeting
with the leadership of Okada/ Tricycles Association of Ekiti State
said that the process which started late last year was suspended owing
to the lockdown occasioned by the global occurrence of COVID-19
pandemic .
Mr. Ogunmilade said that the ongoing reforms of the operations of
commercial motorcyclists in the State are to curb insecurity and
guarantee sanity on the roads, noting that the reforms tagged ‘Ekiti
State Mobility Transformation’ would ensure proper registration and
identification of all Okada Riders in the State.
He stressed that the reforms would curb nefarious activities of
criminals acting under the guise of being commercial motorcyclists to
harm unsuspecting citizens in the State.
While assuring the leadership of the Unions of not encroaching into
their structures, the State IRS boss highlighted the reforms to
include enumeration of all commercial motorcyclists in the State,
issuance of riders permit at a subsidized rate and free customized
reflective jacket with corresponding numbers for each rider as well as
proper branding of the operational motorcycles with the State logo,
which will be done by the State consultants, Metro Africa Xpress
Limited (MAXOKADA). while all registered riders would be captured free
under an insurance policy that would cover accidents and
injuries,Ogunmilade said the State Government has given operators of
commercial motorcycles a 2-week grace to register in order to benefit
from the scheme and avoid running afoul of the law, warning that
government agents would commence enforcement of the exercise on the
23rd November, 2020.
Reacting on behalf of the union , Chairman Okada /Tricycle Association
of Ekiti State, Mr. Kunle Ashaolu lauded the State Government for the
initiative which he said was aimed at making their lives and work
better, pledging the full support and cooperation of the association
to the project and Dr. Fayemi’s led administration.
In attendance at the meeting were the S.S.A to the Governor on
Mobilization, Prince Tunji Ogunlola, S.A Political, (North) Hon.
Kayode Olowookere, S.A Informal Sector, Prince Adedayo Aladeloye and
S.A Media to the Governor, Mrs. Mary Oso- Omotoso.
Others are staff of the Ekiti State Internal Revenue Service, the Vice
Chairman, afar Abdulahi and other exco members of the association
