ICPC boss calls for establishment of anti-corruption clubs in schools

Government and stakeholders in the education sector have been urged to
encourage and support the establishment of anti-corruption clubs in
secondary schools in Ekiti State.
Speaking during an advocacy visit to the Ministry of Education Science
and Technology, The State Commissioner for Independent Corrupt
Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Ekiti State,
Mr. Baba Alaro said the establishment of anti-corruption clubs in
schools will make students participate actively in the fight against
corruption in the country.
The State Commissioner for ICPC who revealed that the visit became
necessary in other to seek partnership with the ministry added that
the agency is the apex body vested with the responsibilities to
fighting corruption and other related offences in Nigeria and was
inaugurated on 29th September, 2000 by President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Mr Alaro who further elaborated that giving or accepting of
gratifications, bribery and failure to report bribery transactions,
inflation of prices of goods and services among others are criminal
offences attract seven years imprisonment with payment of one hundred
thousand naira as fine.
According to him, ICPC targets corruption in the public sector,
especially bribery, gratification graft and abuse or misuse of office.
Earlier, The Commissioner for Education Science and Technology, Dr
Olabimpe Aderiye, commended ICPC for extending its fight against
corruption to schools in the state and promised to support the fight
against corruption.
In his remarks, The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education
Science and Technology, Mr James Owolabi who appreciated the State
Commissioner for ICPC and his team for the visit added that Ekiti
State is a land of transparency and accountability and also promised
to aid the fight against corruption by instilling the virtues of hard
work and honesty among members of staff.
