The First Lady of Ekiti, Erelu Bisi Fayemi has promised to revamp the
moribund Aso -Oke Industry in the State, to meet the global standard
with a view to promote local content for employment generation.
Erelu Fayemi stated this on Tuesday during an interactive session with
the Ekiti Aso-Oke Weavers Association, held at Lady Jibowu hall,
government house ground, Ado Ekiti, with the theme “Harnessing local
productivity for Greater Economic Potential”.
Explaining the inspiration behind her sponsorship of the program, Mrs.
Fayemi said she conceived the idea after her experience during her
niece’s wedding when the Aso-Oke was needed by guests and invitees but
it was not delivered on time from those who were contracted to import
and supply it.
She said,, “To me and to some other people, the imported fabrics are
not as soft as our homemade products and some of them washed away
after some time, l lived in Ghana for a decade and know how valuable
their fabrics (KENTE) is to them, I also visited a lot of places and
see how Chinese country duplicates our Aso-Oke and sell for high price
even though their originality can not be guaranteed. It is time we
produce our homemade materials, enough of imported Aso-Oke in our land
where it’s being originally produced.
She said government will support our weavers in cash and kind, noting
that there are acquisition centers in Igede and Ado-Ekiti where our
people can learn and produce enough quantity for people’s consumption.
While highlighting the needs of the association such as loom, cottons
etc. the First Lady promised to empower the weavers and also
encouraged them to make Aso-Oke nose masks for commercial purposes,
saying:” Yoruba was the first to wear clothes, we are endowed with a
lot of talents, and we are taking the Aso-Oke to the limelight”.
Responding, the Chairman of Ekiti state chapter of Aso-Oke weavers
Association, Mrs. Dupe Adeleye and other members of the association
who lamented that they have been neglected for so long, thanked Her
Excellency for her readiness to support local content.
