Sequel to the meetings between Ekiti State Government and leaders of
transport unions, the critical stakeholders have agreed in principle
to effect downward review of commodity prices.
The resolution was reached at a parley with the Governor, Dr. Kayode
Fayemi on Monday at Jibowu Hall, Governor’s Office Ado Ekiti, where
leaders of the various groups were in attendance.
Speaking at the meeting, the Governor, represented by his Chief of
Staff Hon. Biodun Omoleye, commended the union leaders for acceding to
government’s requests to crash the prices of fares in the state.
The Governor explained that their intentions have proved that they
truly have the people’s interest at heart, with a promise that
government will not shirk from its responsibilities to make life
better for them.
Fayemi disclosed the readiness of his administration to make soft
loans available to various groups and also ensure that the prices of
spare parts and other commodities are affordable in the State.
He lamented a scenario where Ekiti residents had to travel to
patronize people in other states at the expense of those providing
similar products and services in the State, thereby leading to capital
flight in the State.
The NURTW President, Mr. Rotimi Olanbiwonninu who spoke on behalf of
others said the unions after painful negotiations and consideration
coupled with the fact that they too have relatives who also bear the
brunt, agreed to make a downward review of the fares.
They promised to convey the new prices agreed upon to their members
across the State and feed the government back on Wednesday when the
prices will be finalised.
Others at the meeting were the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Hon
Funminiyi Afuye represented by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Hakeem Jamiu,
Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Aare Muyiwa Olumilua, Senior
Special Assistant on Community Engagement and Enlightenment, Chief
(Mrs.) Tosin Ajisafe-Aluko and others.
