World Cycling Day : Ogun govt., FRSC admonishes Nigerians to do exercise

As the world celebrated World Cycling Day, the Ogun government and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has admonished Nigerians to cultivate the habit of regular exercise of the body system.

Speaking after a cycling race to commemorate the day, the State Commissioner for Transportation, Gbenga Dairo , said cycling should be considered as a model of transportation to work or school.

Dairo noted that cycling encompassed total development of the body.


Dairo said that government would consider bicycle riding as a major means of transportation in the state.

He implored all road users to know that bicycle riders have their own right on the highway, they should be respected and create space for them for easy riding.

The transportation commisioner said that no driver or rider should be allowed on the highway if they had not gone to training school and get adequate approval from law enforcement agencies on road laws.


He encouraged security agencies to create adequate security for bicycles not to be stolen when packed.

The commisioner also encourage local investors to invest on bicycle so that it could be acquired cheaply for everybody.

Mr Ahmed Umar, the Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun, said that the world cycling day was about sensitisation on the need to ride bicycle and continue keeping fit.

Umar explained that cycling is cheaper, environment friendly, convenient and it reduced number of vehicles on the road which in turn reduced road traffic crashes.


He commended the exercise, saying that instead of indulging in vices, the youths could take to learning and riding bicycle which could also be a means of livelihood .


He suggested cycling riding to the state as a cheap means of transportation to beat cost spent on fuel and to reduce road accident caused on the highway.


The sector commander said it was high time government started considering cycle riding as a means of transportation when constructing roads in the state.

Ahmed who rode bicycle alongside with 25 riders from the FRSC office to Oke Mosan and back to Abeokuta Sport Club said, encouraging cycling on our major roads would reduce number of cars and motorcycle on the road which would reduce road accident to the minimum.

He said bicycle riding does not mean poverty , it is environmental friendly, affordable, convenient and easy to ride, saying that all parents should encourage their children to ride to school by buying them bicycle and teach them the right way to ride.


Also speaking, the Secretary to the State Government, Tokunbo Talabi, advised the populace to always ride bicycles as a means of recreation, saying it reset the body system, reduce sickness and also increase ones life spam.

Also joining the celebration was the Commissioner for Information, Waheed Odusile and other FRSC officials.
