OGUN SPEAKER LAUDS FIBAN ON ESTABLISHMENT OF COLLEGE OF BROADCASTING IN ABEOKUTA
The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, has commended the initiative and ingenuity of the Freelance and Independent Broadcasters Association of Nigeria (FIBAN) for the establishment of a College of Broadcasting in the State.
Oluomo, who gave the commendation during a courtesy visit by the national leadership of the association led by its National President, Comrade Desmond Nwachukwu on the State lawmakers at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, noted that the academy was one of the complementary efforts of the Association meant to consolidate on the legacies of the founding fathers of broadcasting in the country.
The Speaker stated that the academy was a step in the right direction towards allowing for the establishment of more broadcasting stations across the nation, expressing that such would provide improved human capacity programmes for broadcasting personnel and upcoming professionals.
He assured the Association of the Assembly’s support towards ensuring the smooth running of activities in the academy, while challenging them to widen the scope of operations of the institution through partnership with other relevant stakeholders.
Earlier his remarks, Nwachukwu expressed concern over the activities of quackery within the broadcasting profession, especially the scourge of fake news in the society, noting that the establishment of the broadcast academy was meant to checkmate all forms of unprofessional practices and conducts amongst existing and prospective broadcasters.
Stressing the agenda-setting role of broadcast media in shaping human actions and thoughts, the national President added that members of the association, who produced over 70% of broadcast contents, remained an integral part of the fourth estate of the realm.
Nwachukwu added that the academy would avail its prospective students with the current trends, including technological prospects and other innovations in the profession, while providing employment opportunities for the teeming youth.
He commended the existing synergy among the three arms of government in the State which had led to socio-economic advancement, while lauding the lawmakers for passing people-oriented bills that had impacted positively on all human endeavours.
