Why Ogun East Deserves A Federal University

By Prince Taiwo Nodiru

Ever since Ogun State was created in 1976, most of the Federal institutions that were created in the State were located outside Ogun East Senatorial District ( Ijebu and Remo division). Ogun East covers nine (9) out of the twenty (20) constitutionally recognized Local Government in the State , Ogun West (Yewa) covers five (5) while Ogun Central (Egba) covers the remaining six (6) Local Government Areas.

Despite the largest size of the Ogun East, no tangible Federal Institutions be it Health, Education or any Federal infrastructure is located in any part of Ijebu and Remo division of Ogun State.
It might be of interest to know that the late sage Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Pa Abraham Adesanya, Chief Olabisi Onabanjo ( the first Executive Governor of Ogun State), General Oladipupo Diya, Pa Hubert Ogunnde, Senator Jubril Martins Kuye (two times Federal Minister), Otunba Gbenga Daniel OGD (former Governor of Ogun State), Michael Adenuga, Prince Segun Adesegun ( former Deputy Governor), Senator Gbenga Kaka ( former Deputy Governor), Senator Biyi Durojaye, Dr Tai Solarin, Prof Wole Soyinka, the incumbent Deputy Minority Whip in the Green Chamber Aremo Adesegun Adekoya ATTACKER and Distinguished Senator Abd-Rahaman Olamilekan Mustapha are some of the cream la cream that Ogun East has produced.

Even the incumbent Executive Governor of Ogun State Prince Dapo Abiodun MFR and the current Nigeria Vice President, Professor Yemi Osibajo are from Ogun East Senatorial District.
One will then wonder that with the aforementioned great personalities that have made various landmarks achievements in the history of Nigeria, not a single notable Federal University / Polytechnic / College of Education is located in Ogun East Senatorial District. This is a major challenge.

All hope is not lost as I wish to suggest that both the Federal and Ogun State Government should look in the direction of converting the Olabisi Onabanjo University Ago Iwoye to a Federal University.
Ogun State is presently running two State Universities , Olabisi Onabanjo University , Ago Iwoye (OOU) and Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) Ijagun. It will be a great advantage to the good people of Ogun State and Ijebu Remo in particular if OOU Ago Iwoye is made a Federal University.

The Federal University of Agriculture (FUNAAB) is located in Abeokuta ( Ogun Central), The Federal Polytechnic is located in Ilaro (Ogun West) about to be converted to a Federal University through the efforts of Senator Solomon Adeola YAYI.The Federal College of Education is located in Abeokuta ( Ogun Central),
Ogun East is nil.

Let me personally make a passionate appeal to His Excellency Professor Yemi Osinbajo, the Vice President of Nigeria to work in conjunction with Prince Dapo Abiodun MFR the Executive Governor of Ogun, Senator Lekan Mustapha, AREMO Adesegun Adekoya who is a Principal Officer in the National Assembly – Green Chamber to make this request a reality. The conversion of OOU Ago Iwoye to a Federal University will be a legacy project of the Vice President and this is achievable.

The Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital , Sagamu (OOUTH) will then be managed by the Federal Government as one of the organs of the University thereby reducing the financial burden of the Ogun State Government while providing more qualitative health services to the people of Ijebu and Remo and Ogun State at large.

His Royal Majesty, Oba Dr Sikiru Adetona, The Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebu Land as well as the Akarigbo of Remo Land should also provide necessary background supports.
I hereby call on all well meaning Ijebu and Remo people to rise up and give the needed supports towards ensuring the possibility of this lofty idea

Further benefits include rapid infrastructural development especially in the area of students hostels / accommodation which will guarantee total eradication of clashes between the students and host Communities, improve security network, drastic reduction in tuition fees, completion of the abandoned Ilisan – Ago Iwoye road which is the major road to the permanent site of the University amongst other benefits.

May Almighty God continue to guide, guard and bless all the principal actors that will make the dream become a reality.

God bless Ogun State and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Spread the love
