Accidents claim 194 in Ogun in 6 months, says FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says 194 persons were killed while 1,245 others sustained injuries in various road accidents in Ogun between January and June.

Mr Ahmed Umar, the State Sector Commander disclosed this during the first half of the year retreat, held at the command’s headquarters in Abeokuta on Tuesday.

Umar explained that 614 road accidents were recorded during the period under review as against 405 recorded in same period in 2020.

The sector commander stated that most of the accidents occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

The FRSC boss attributed the causes of the accidents to bad road, wrongful overtaking, non use of seat belts, bad tyres and excessive speeding.

He urged motorists to drive cautiously and always maintain the required speed limit, saying that FRSC would continue its sensitisation programmes on safety on the road.

He disclosed that the command was working closely to organise ‘Special Intervention Patrol’ with Lagos and Oyo state to ensure routine patrol on the corridors.

On his parts, the Executive Secretary Ogun State Security Trust Fund, Opeyemi Agbaje, noted that the state government and the security trust fund had been supporting the FRSC by providing a patrol vehicle for them in order to ease there work.

Agbaje added that the state security trust fund was also determined to sponsor jingle on the radio to give more awareness on the 112 emergency number because of any emergency on the road.
