ABEOKUTA – The National Identification Management Commission (NIMC) has begun community registration of the National Identification Number (NIN) for residents of Ogun State.
The NIMC Coordinator in Ogun State, Mr. Oladele Lasisi who disclosed this to newsmen on Tuesday said the commission has taken the registration centre to all the 20 local government areas of the state to encourage more registration of the people.
Mr. Lasisi maintained that despite the ban on sim cards owner that failed to register their National Identification Number (NIN), expressed displeasure over the low turnout of NIN Registration in Ogun State, calling on people to take the advantage of the current low pressure to do their registration.
The NIMC boss spoke on Tuesday while paying courtesy visit to the Alake and Paramount ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo at his palace in Abeokuta.
Lasisi who was received by the Alake Regency Committee stated that it was important for the people not to wait until the federal government takes another punitive measure before doing the registration, noting that everybody deserves the benefit of it.
He stressed that it was in the best interest of residents to do so, just as it was good for data and financial planning.
He added that the registration would enhance ease of doing business and financial transactions in the country.
“We are not satisfied with the numbers of the registration, there is hardly any government service or opportunities now that you want to apply for that would not require you to produce a NIN number and the percentage has not been impressive, we don’t want the federal government to make punitive measures again.”
Lasisi urged the Egba traditional Chiefs and community leaders to educate their people on the importance and relevance of the National Identification Number NIN.
He reiterated that the NIN has become a prerequisite requirement for any government service or registration in the country.
“Now that the pressure is down we expect people to come and do the registration, that is why we are to talk to the chiefs so they can educate and help us talk to their communities about the importance and relevance of NIN”
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of Alake Regency, Lateef Badaru appreciated NIMC management for bringing its enrollment registration closer to the grassroots.
Dr. Badaru advised that it was important the federal government to collaborate with the National Population Commission to enable them issue the NIN directly from birth.
“The federal government must include the issuance of NIN to everyone born in Nigeria as they always give the birth certificate, I want to advise that the NIMC collaborate with Nigeria Population Commission so they can work together”.
