ABUJA – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has expressed fear over the spread of misinformation during the 2023 general plebiscite.
To this end, the Commission vowed to double its efforts towards countering disinformation and misinformation, adding that it would remain transparent and provide required information to combat fake news.
INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, who spoke at a quarterly consultative meeting with heads of media organisations, yesterday, in Abuja, promised to conduct a credible elections.
According to him, there would be no need for incident forms because results will be transmitted to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) in real-time during election.
Yakubu said: “As the 2023 General Election approaches, we shall continue to work together to counter disinformation and misinformation.
“We will remain transparent and provide the required information to combat the triple menace as an antidote to fake news.
“Therefore, there will be need for more frequent and intense engagements with you ahead of the election.
“We hope that in spite of your competing activities, you will continue to honour our invitation.
“Voters will be accredited by means of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).
“There will be no Incident Form. Results will be transmitted to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) in real-time on Election Day.
“We are committed to ensuring that the 2023 General Election is transparent and credible, reflecting the will of the Nigerian people.”
On his part, the National President, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Chris Isiguzo, implored Nigerians to exercise their franchise.
Represented by NUJ National Treasurer, Tunde Bamidele, he tasked the Commission to replicate the successes recorded in Osun and Ekiti States governorship election.
